A man is on trial for allegedly defrauding his brother of N5.2 million.

Godwin Paul, 58, appeared in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday for allegedly cheating his brother of N5.2 million.

Paul, who lives in Kaduna’s Television Area, was charged with fraud.

The prosecution, Insp Chidi Leo, informed the court that the matter was reported to the Gabasawa Divisional Police Station on March 20 by one Godwin Simeon, the defendant’s brother.

The complainant, according to Leo, sought the defendants to assist him in selling four plots of land in Kaduna’s Kujama Chikun Local Government Area.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant fraudulently converted the sum of N5.2 million, which came from the sale of the complainant’s land plots, to his personal use.

He claimed that when the complainant learned that the defendant had sold the land, he demanded the money, but that the defendant refused.

The offenses, according to Leo, were in violation of Section 97 of the Kaduna State Penal Code of 2017.

The defendant, on the other hand, has entered a not guilty plea to the charge.

The defendant was granted bail in the amount of N200,000 with two sureties in the same amount by the Chief Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel.

The sureties, according to Emmanuel, must live in the court’s jurisdiction and own a landed property, as well as attest to an affidavit of means.

He further stated that the sureties and defendant must deposit two passport photographs, as well as the defendant’s passport, with the court’s registrar.

He postponed the case’s hearing until June 24.
