According to the British government, Deborah Samuel, a 200-level student at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State, was burned to death on Thursday.
Male Muslim classmates allegedly beat the girl to a pulp and burned her alive after accusing her of offending Prophet Muhammed on WhatsApp, according to sources.
The school management decided to cease academic activity indefinitely as the residents of the region became tense.
Many Nigerians have condemned the behavior.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, replied to the incident on Twitter, calling President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators.
“I condemn Deborah Samuel’s murder in Sokoto and call on the police and appropriate authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice in accordance with the law,” Laing said.
